5 Ways to Protect Your Data in the Cloud

February 22, 2018 by Laura Peters Leave a Comment

protect your dataCloud computing is big business now. Dropbox, SkyDrive, and Google Drive are the most used cloud options out there. While it can be advantageous, it also comes with some drawbacks, mostly concerning security. With the use of cloud computing on the rise due to its affordability, and easy access, are you getting the right security protocols that are needed?
  1. Choose the right cloud for you

When you pick one, you will be really dependent on it, and the task of switching your files over to something else will seem daunting, so be sure to do some careful research of what each one has to offer before you commit. Make sure whatever you choose interfaces well with your current software and equipment. Also, be aware of any limitation that exists. Don’t be stuck using something that you don’t like.

  1. Keep multiple copies of your data

Yes, the cloud can be a great use to back up your data, but what happens if it goes down or you have outages? Your data become inaccessible. Don’t rely solely on the cloud to house, store, and backup your data. It could cause problems.

  1. Encrypt your data

Your data isn’t entirely protected just by storing it in the cloud. You need to make sure that whatever option you choose provides the right level of security for your data. If you are putting in information that is vital to keep secret, make sure it is encrypted. If all of your data needs a high level of protection, get a cloud service that is encrypted.

  1. Passwords

Storing your data securely in the cloud does no good if you use a flimsy password, like PASSWORD! There are many methods to create a secure password, but make sure you don’t gloss over this step. Create that secure word or phrase.

  1. Limit access

Ease of access is one of the best things about the cloud, but make sure only people who need access to sensitive information have it. Limiting access keeps people from accidentally deleting items, and it also helps protect data if an intrusion happens.

Being proactive about your data security measures is always the most important thing. As hackers continue to grow and evolve, you will need to keep ahead of them in the protection of your data.
