The 5 First Steps to Complete When Your Internet Is Down

June 28, 2018 by Laura Peters Leave a Comment

What to do when you're Internet is downThe Internet is crucial to a business and necessary when completing some of your daily tasks. So, what are you supposed to do when it doesn’t work? Here are a few steps to take when your Internet is down.
  1. Restart Your Computer

Yes, I know. Restarting your computer seems like a ridiculous thing to do, but trust us, restarting your computer fixes a lot of minor issues that you might be having. When you restart your computer, all those processes that were running in the background are finally shut down. That includes internet browsers, apps, and other programs that you use daily. Having a clean slate can speed up your computer, and it might also fix a faulty internet connection.

  1. Restart your Router/Modem

Don’t do a hard reset. Just unplug it from the wall and plug it back in. Or, better yet, if there is an on/off switch, use that! Restarting your router/modem follows the same reasoning as restarting your computer. It might not be very explainable, but it works, so give it a go before sounding the alarm.

  1. Isolate the Problem

Is it everyone in the office that can’t get connected or just you? Are some people connected via an ethernet cord and others using wireless? If you find a connection between individuals encountering an issue, it will give you an indication of what the problem could be. For example, if only wireless users aren’t connected, then it probably has something to do with your access point, not the internet. Completing these checks is helpful information to have handy if you need to call your tech support.

  1. Contact Your Internet Service Provider (“ISP”)

By contacting the company who provides your internet, you’ll quickly be able to tell if they are having scheduled or unscheduled problems in your area. We all know things happen, and this might be one of those cases. Give them a call to see if there are problems in your area and they might be able to tell you when they estimate service to be restored.

  1. Did Something Change?

If your ISP says that everything looks good on their end, then think if something has changed at your office. Did you move anything around? Sometimes it could be as easy as a loose cord, or cable that needs to be plugged back in. If you are at your wit’s end, call your technology company (Networks Unlimited) and let them know all the steps you’ve taken and let them take it from there!

If the internet goes down, don’t panic. Just go through a couple of these steps and most likely, you will be back up and running in no time! Otherwise, contact us and we can get you connected as quickly as possible!
